Here is one such example that is worth a look when the need arises for an inexpensive effort that will provide quality that is roughly between a good Bourgogne and an average villages level wine though the aromatic and flavor profiles are not comparable (nor should they be).

Tasting note: A high-toned cherry and raspberry nose that has subtle earth aromas combines with fresh, bright, fruity and delicious flavors that are clean, reasonably precise and do not reflect any of the surfeits of most mass produced wines as there is no overt oak, excess alcohol or any effort to make the flavors seem bigger than they should be to maintain good balance. In short, this is an understated and perfectly respectable effort that makes no pretensions of being something that it's not, which is refreshing frankly if for no other reason than because it's so unusual. This overachieving Sardinian producer keep turning out truly amazing values that make a mockery of wines selling for three times more. Not long ago, we've opened a bottle of 1983 Costera (blind) and it was not only fresh as a daisy, but shockingly good.

Situated in the commune of Ordonnac, Gallais Bellevue is a small mature vineyard (average age of the vines is 25 years), sited on a high knoll overlooking the Gironde estuary. Alta Bussia –a blend of the Barbera (80%) and Nebbiolo (20%) varieties- highlights the character and lustre of the vineyards in Bussia, renowned as being one of the finest sites in the entire Barolo growing area, and it was decided to name this wine after its source for its very propertirs of concentration combined with elegance. With a very dense, almost impenetrable appearance, it has an elegant nose of fruit ranging from cassis to red currants, accompanied by sweet, balsamic overtones. A powerful flavour packed with extracts gives it a well-balanced, lingerig finish.

Even though 2002 was a difficult vintage in Piemonte, Ghisolfi was determined to produce a small amount of his single vineyard Barolo and release it at a bargain price to let the masses discover the beauty of Nebbiolo without breaking the bank. This is an absolutely delicious bottle of Pinot Noir and an incredible value given all the plonk out there in this price range. The nose is ripe and pure with aromas of black cherries and spice. On the palate, this medium to full-bodied wine has a flavor profile featuring plums, cherries, earth, and spice with a wonderful texture, good acidity, and a long, lingering finish. This wine is fantastic now but will certainly drink well over the next few years. A bottle opened for 24 hours showed no sign of fading - rare for a $25.00 Pinot Noir!

A great vintage and a superb wine at a reasonable price. What more can you ask for? Repeating their strong performance of 2000, this up and coming producer has fashioned another beauty in 2001 and the price is truly hard to beat for such a superb bottle of Brunello. All Brunello lovers will enjoy this wine immensely.

The new wine from Giorgio is the Langhe Nebbiolo 2004. We have just tasted the wine two days ago and it is as good as other producers Barolos or Barbarescos that sell for more than twice the price. After all, the grapes come from his famed Starderi vineyard, his top Barbaresco Cru. This superb wine is bottled with no filtration and clarification. It is defined, vibrant red in color with black plum, currant and black cherry flavors and aromas of mint and leather. Warm, with perfect tannins, great elegance, yet round with fine finish and with at least 15 years of evolution ahead.

After selling over 200 cases of the superb 2004, we were disappointed to find out that there was not going to be any 2005 produced, due to the ripping out of Spring Mountain clone vines that were included in the blend. Master Dan Kravits was hard at work and found a suitable replacement to produce another superb value Chardonnay that will surely fly off the shelves. The 2006 is a blend of 30-40% Davis clone from Riverview vineyard and the rest is Dijon clone. As with every previous vintage, the emphasis in on pure Chardonnay fruit without any oak treatment, fining or filtration. We have included below, the review for the 2004 vintage and the 2006 is of equal or even better quality.

To this day, this is still my favorite Ribeaupierre vintage. Spices, lychee nuts and flowers on the nose, carry through the palate with a gorgeous array of flavors. Very complex, with good acidity and a very long, satysfying finish.
