Contrary to popular belief, there is a tremendous amount of mediocre wines being produced in California that sell for big $ simply under the false pretense of "limited production". It is refreshing, at times, to encounter a great quality Cab that sells at a reasonable price and this is certainly one of those. Enjoy
"“An excellent value in Cabernet Sauvignon from the Beckstoffer family, this offering indicates that a higher potential for quality exists for Lake County Cabernet than previously believed. A dark ruby/purple color is accompanied by a classic nose of sweet black cherries and cassis (reminiscent of a Rutherford Cab), pleasant spice and smoke characteristics, medium to full body, and silky tannin. This pure, elegant beauty should be consumed over the next 10-12 years.
90 points" Robert Parker

When you are in the mood to reach for a delicious, uncomplicated bottle of Pinot Noir, we can guarantee that you will be pleased with this wine.
Allen Meadows of Burghound..."As readers know, the huge majority of the wines reviewed in Burghound are made in small to almost microscopic quantities yet occasionally I run into a mass produced wine (by the standards of pinot noir) that is more than simply acceptable. Here is one such example that is worth a look when the need arises for an inexpensive effort that will provide quality that is roughly between a good Bourgogne and an average villages level wine though the aromatic and flavor profiles are not comparable (nor should they be).
Tasting note: A high-toned cherry and raspberry nose that has subtle earth aromas combines with fresh, bright, fruity and delicious flavors that are clean, reasonably precise and do not reflect any of the surfeits of most mass produced wines as there is no overt oak, excess alcohol or any effort to make the flavors seem bigger than they should be to maintain good balance. In short, this is an understated and perfectly respectable effort that makes no pretensions of being something that it's not, which is refreshing frankly if for no other reason than because it's so unusual. Robert Parker, March 18th 2006 from Bordeaux...."Funny to me commenting on this wine after tasting 225+ rather astonishing 2005 Bordeaux this week, but this is the finest red wine I have ever had from South Africa....a partnership of Bruno Prats,Hubert de Bouard, and the Klein Constantia folks. This debut release, the 2005,a blend of 37% syrah and the balance cabernet sauvignon,is world class stuff....as one might expect from the people behind it....the first release...there are 42,000 bottles from their vineyards in Stellenbosch, and it is priced to sell for about $40-45 in the USA...release is imminent....exceptional wine...."

This overachieving Sardinian producer keep turning out truly amazing values that make a mockery of wines selling for three times more.
Not long ago, we've opened a bottle of 1983 Costera (blind) and it was not only fresh as a daisy, but shockingly good.
"The brilliant 2005 Costera IGT is composed of 90% Cannonau (a local grape believed to be a derivative of Grenache), 5% Carignano, and 5% Bovale Sardo. This powerhouse red represents Sardinia’s version of Chateauneuf du Pape. It boasts sweet black cherry fruit interwoven with notes of pepper, Provencal herbs, spice box, and licorice. This full-bodied beauty possesses superb texture and depth. Drink it over the next 2-3 years. One of my favorite estates from Sardinia, Argiolas, located just north of Cagliari, has long promoted the island’s indigenous varietals, including Nuragus and Vermentino for their whites, and such red grapes as Cannonau, Monica, Carignano, and Bovale Sardo. I strongly urge readers to check out these fabulous wine values as they are every bit as good as these enthusiastic notes suggest. Just one caveat: Drink the whites within a year of release, and the reds within several." 91 points Robert Parker

Another absolutely fantastic wine from the great but largely overlooked Marche region. This wine rocks!
"A certain school of thought in the Marches believes that Sangiovese is not suited to the region and that producers would do better to concentrate on Montepulciano. I can’t say that I agree with the theory, particularly after tasting the 2001 Saltapicchio of Elvidio Alessandri, pure and focused Sangiovese with the red berry fruit, the herbs, tobacco, and underbrush, and the length, vitality, and structure of this variety at its best. "Cavallotto's 2005 Dolcetto d'Alba Vigna Scot exhibits a dark inky color along with a fleshy core of blue and black fruit, with excellent length on the palate and a slightly bitter note on the finish. It is a terrific, fully- flavored Dolcetto to enjoy now and over the next few years. In recent vintages this wine has emerged as one of the region's top Dolcettos, as well as one of the estate's most unique offerings. Some 2005 Bordeaux are already hitting the shores and for those seeking immediate gratification, here is a great bargain of the vintage.
"The brilliant St.-Emilion consultant, Stephane Derenoncourt, fashions wines at this impeccably run Bordeaux Superieur estate from a blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Like so many smaller chateaux in 2005, this unbelievable offering as well as fabulous bargain transcends its class. There are 6,600 cases of this 2005, which achieved 13% alcohol naturally. It offers a dense purple color as well as a sweet nose of melted chocolate, cassis, and a subtle hint of wood. Opulent, round, and medium to full-bodied, it is ideal for drinking over the next 5-6 years." 90-92 points R. Parker

When we first saw the prices for classified growths in 2005, we were indeed shocked. After the initial surprise, we did settle down to realize that, like in Burgundy, 2005 is filled with truly amazing wines that defy their status and are incredibly well priced. Smart buyers that have been re-tasting little wines such as Cap de Faugeres, Reignac, Fontenil, Picque Caillou, and many other "little" gems from the 2000 vintage (another consistent permormer across all Bordeaux communes), can attest to the fact that one does not have to spend a fortune to drink great wines from a great vintage.
This superb wine is one of the many you will see from 2005 that will make you balance your Bordeaux perspective in one of the greatest vintages our lifetime.

It's easier to complain about some of Bordeaux most sought after, rarest wines and their high prices than actually open one's mind to the many tremendous values that this region still has to offer. It comes as no surprise that the vintage on the move is 2004, since it was bought with a stronger dollar and by comparison 2005s and 2006s are 50-100% more expensive. For Bordeaux lovers looking to do some smart buying the best 2004s truly offer the best QPR (Quality/Price Ratio) and that's something we may not see again for a while.
This wonderful Grand Cru St Emilion is a property on the rise and the 2004 is a small gem that's an absolute steal at this level. We highly recommend it!
"Primarily a blend of 75% merlot and 25% cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon, Fleur Cardinale is an up-and-comer in St.-Emilion. Moreover the wine remains reasonably priced for such impeccably well-made Bordeaux. The 2004 is outstanding, revealing sweet black currant fruit, cedar, and spice characteristics. These beauties can be consumed during their first 10 to 12 years of life." 92 points Robert Parker (BusinessWeek May 21st 2007)

Situated in the commune of Ordonnac, Gallais Bellevue is a small mature vineyard (average age of the vines is 25 years), sited on a high knoll overlooking the Gironde estuary. It is owned by the Delon family, who also owns Chateau Léoville Las Cases and Chateau Potensac. Jacques Boissenot, who took over the reins at all three properties from the legendary Professor Émile Peynaud (famed Bordeaux consultant oenologist), does the wine-making and how well he did in 2001. One can always tell the
traits of a great vintage from the less expensive
wines and this one surely does not disappoint. We
had a nice visit from Chiara Boschis yesterday and,
as always, she was a pleasure to see as she is truly
one
of the nicest people in "Nebbiolo World" and certainly
worth a visit if you plan a trip to Piemonte. The 2005
Dolcetto D'Alba is a beauty, bursting with fruit and so
impeccably balanced. For the price, it one hell of a
bottle of wine to enjoy over the next 5 years.

Consistently one of the greatest wines and values, from Italy. The gorgeous 2001, 100% Merlot, can stand proudly next to the best Pomerols.
"A luxurious, almost decadently rich wine, the deep ruby/purple-colored 2001 Montiano (100% Merlot, like every vintage to date) has an extraordinary nose of espresso roast and sweet kirsch intermixed with some licorice and mocha. The wine is very full bodied, opulently textured, and just terrific. This has become the great Merlot of southern Italy and is on a par with the finest Merlots made in the world." 95 points R. Parker (World's Greatest Estate book, 2005).

There is virtually nothing in Falesco's portfolio that does not offer a HUGE bang for your buck. In every vintage, these are among the best values in all of Italy.
"The outstanding 2005 Vitiano Sangiovese makes a mockery of many of the over-priced Sangioveses emerging from other areas of the world. A stunning value, it boasts a beautiful bouquet of sweet cherries, strawberries, bay leaf, spice, and blacker fruits. Full-bodied with superb length, good underlying acidity, and a beautiful texture, it spent six months in barrel before being bottled." 90 points R. Parker

Alta Bussia –a blend of the Barbera (80%) and Nebbiolo (20%) varieties- highlights the character and lustre of the vineyards in Bussia, renowned as being one of the finest sites in the entire Barolo growing area, and it was decided to name this wine after its source for its very propertirs of concentration combined with elegance.
With a very dense, almost impenetrable appearance, it has an elegant nose of fruit ranging from cassis to red currants, accompanied by sweet, balsamic overtones.
A powerful flavour packed with extracts gives it a well-balanced, lingerig finish.

Even though 2002 was a difficult vintage in Piemonte, Ghisolfi was determined to produce a small amount of his single vineyard Barolo and release it at a bargain price to let the masses discover the beauty of Nebbiolo without breaking the bank. After selling out our first 100 cases, we can certainly say that he has achieved his objective. A superb, soft, perfectly balanced, drinkable Barolo, at a price that should be on a bottle of Dolcetto.

This is an absolutely delicious bottle of Pinot Noir
and an incredible value given all the plonk out there
in this price range. The nose is ripe and pure with
aromas of black cherries and spice. On the palate,
this medium to full-bodied wine has a flavor profile
featuring plums, cherries, earth, and spice with a
wonderful texture, good acidity, and a long, lingering
finish. This wine is fantastic now but will certainly
drink well over the next few years. A bottle opened for
24 hours showed no sign of fading - rare for a $25.00

Pinot Noir is the most popular varietal on the market and so many people have re-discovered how great Burgundy can be. There are many superb California Pinots but let's not forget where the masters are nothing can beat a great bottle of Burgundy in terms of complexity and longevity.
Today, we have a very special wine from the amazing 2002 vintage. It is a beautiful bottle of wine that, at $25, makes a mockery of most domestic Pinot selling for twice the price...and it will age beautifully for another 10 years!
Tasting note: Wonderfully elegant red and black fruit aromas nuanced with an intense soil character and the freshness and purity of the nose are most impressive. The medium weight, sappy, round and sweet flavors are slightly gamy and display distinct notes of earth and underbrush and this is very much a wine of its terroir as it's completely different from the foregoing examples. In particular, I like the spice and persistence on the finish and this is delicious yet completely serious. Outstanding! Drink 2008-2014 90 points Allen Meadows (Burghound)

What else could we expect from the second wine of Montrose in a great vintage? Absolutely superb and a great bargain!
"A superb second wine, 39% of the production made it into the 2000 La Dame de Montrose. Revealing abundant Merlot characteristics, it offers wonderful sweetness, plenty of fat, juicy, chocolatey, black cherry and currant flavors, and a hedonistic personality. It will drink well for 8-10 years. Don't miss it!" 90 points Robert Parker

2003 Barbera d’Asti Superiore Bionzo—Deep inky violet. I typically find the Rionzo the most interesting of the Spinetta Barberas, and the 2003 does not disappoint. It offers captivating aromas of toasted oak, mocha and minerals that jump out of the glass followed by layers of sweet dark fruit in an opulent, richly-textured style. Readers should note that beginning in 2003 this wine carries a proprietary name to give the Barbera lineup consistency in branding. It is the same wine that has simple been labeled Barbera d’Asti Superiore in past vintages. Consumers who are looking for rich, exotic and concentrated Barberas should check out this producer’s excellent wines from the super-ripe 2003 vintage." 91 points Antonio Galloni (The Wine Advocate)

The new wine from Giorgio is the Langhe Nebbiolo 2004. We have just tasted the wine two days ago and it is as good as other producers Barolos or Barbarescos that sell for more than twice the price. After all, the grapes come from his famed Starderi vineyard, his top Barbaresco Cru. This superb wine is bottled with no filtration and clarification. It is defined, vibrant red in color with black plum, currant and black cherry flavors and aromas of mint and leather. Warm, with perfect tannins, great elegance, yet round with fine finish and with at least 15 years of evolution ahead.

"This winery, better known as Tasca d’Almerita, has been a consistent entry into The Wine Advocate’s best buy reports for their value-priced wines from Sicily. Considering how far south they are, these wines possess remarkable freshness, as evidenced by the 2005 Bianco IGT, a blend of such indigenous grapes as Inzolia, Catarratto, and Grecanico. No malolactic is employed for this crisp, elegant white. Aromas of green apples, white peaches, and lemon zest emerge from its medium-bodied, fruity personality. With good acidity and a superb finish, this stunning 2005 will drink well for 1-2 years. " 90 points Robert Parker

After selling over 200 cases of the superb 2004, we were disappointed to find out that there was not going to be any 2005 produced, due to the ripping out of Spring Mountain clone vines that were included in the blend. Master Dan Kravits was hard at work and found a suitable replacement to produce another superb value Chardonnay that will surely fly off the shelves. The 2006 is a blend of 30-40% Davis clone from Riverview vineyard and the rest is Dijon clone. As with every previous vintage, the emphasis in on pure Chardonnay fruit without any oak treatment, fining or filtration. We have included below, the review for the 2004 vintage and the 2006 is of equal or even better quality.
