This comment appeared on Mark Squire's Bulletin Board
recently and it spelled to the letter what we have been preaching for the
last six months. Our advise, to any collector/consumer with disposable
income, is to seriously look at the following wines to purchase over the
next few weeks because these are the ones that will be much harder to
find at good prices.
Robert Parker, April 14th 2006..."Prices will be very high for the 2005
firsts($5,000+ in USA dollars,Petrus and Ausone probably pushing
$7500-10,000 by year end)...and smart money will go back and re-
examine 2003,2000,1996,1995,and 1990"

After having tasted this wine numerous times we can tell you that it would be simply foolish not to pile it up in your cellar at the current price level. The wine is mindblowing!
"Unquestionably, the greatest Calon Segur since the 1982, this blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc exhibits an opaque plum/purple color along with gorgeous aromas of creosote intermixed with black cherries, cassis, licorice, and stony, liquid minerals. An amazing effort, full bodied and opulent, it possesses abundant tannin that is well concealed by the wealth of fruit, glycerin and intensity. This large scaled wine may be tremendous from release, but I suspect it will require patience. Given this estate's history of closing down for considerable time after bottling, despite how precocious the wine shows, look for it to be at its best between 2010-2040." 95+ points R. Parker

You can waste your time trying to find ex-chateau, perfect stock of the 1989 or buy the 1990. The wine is almost undistinguishable from the 1989 and it is half the price. This is a great opportunity to acquire perfect, ex-chateau original cases of this legendary wine.
"More evolved than its world-famous sibling, the 1989, the 1990 continues to gain weight and stature every time I taste it. In a blind tasting, it is not easy to pick the difference between the younger, less evolved 1989 and the blockbuster 1990. The color is just starting to lighten a bit, but it is still saturated purple. Notes of smoke, chocolate, espresso, mocha, and blackberry and cassis jump from the glass of this full bodied, splendidly aromatic, and prodigiously concentrated wine. It is compelling stuff!" 96 points R. Parker

You've heard it here first: the top wines of 2003 are Montrose, Cos D'Estournel and Pavie. The 2003 Cos is already a legend in the making and the greatest Cos ever, even surpassing the awesome 1982. This is one to pile up in the cellar, big time!
"The prodigious, fantastic 2003 Cos d’Estournel is a candidate for “wine of the vintage.” A blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon (unusually high for this chateau), 30% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, 17,500 cases were produced from low yields. An inky/blue/purple color is accompanied by a compelling perfume of black fruits, subtle smoke, pain grille, incense, and flowers. With extraordinary richness, full body, and remarkable freshness, elegance, and persistence, this is one of the finest wines ever made by this estate. The good news is that it will be drinkable at a young age yet evolve for three decades or more. Kudos to winemaker Jean-Guillaume Prats and owner Michel Reybier." 98 pointsRobert Parker

"Intense aromas of blackberry, currant and cherry. Full-bodied, with masses of big, velvety tannins and a finish that lasts for minutes. A blockbuster. A classic big, juicy claret. Best after 2012" 97 points Wine Spectator (Jan. 25th 2006)
"One of the most compelling Ducru Beaucaillou’s made in the last quarter century is the 2003 (which is also the first vintage to be packaged in an impressive heavy glass bottle with a special long cork). A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, it is a powerful, tannic, blockbuster effort revealing a liqueur of mineral-like component intermixed with creme de cassis, raspberry, and flower characteristics, and an atypically high 13.5% alcohol. Having firmed up considerably since bottling, it exhibits tremendous definition, weight, and concentration. It is a wine for patient connoisseurs. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025+. A brilliant tour de force!." 96 points R. Parker

One of Grand Puy Lacoste's greatest efforts, the 1995 is the 1982's natural heir. We have just purchased 20 cases directly from the chateau. This is a great opportunity to acquire perfect stock of a great wine that is very hard to find in any meaningful quantities.
"Another unbelievably rich, multidimensional, broad-shouldered wine, with slightly more elegance and less weight than the powerhouse 1996, this gorgeously proportioned, medium to full-bodied, fabulously ripe, rich, cassis-scented and flavored Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a beauty. It should be drinkable within 4-5 years, and keep for 25-30. This classic Pauillac is a worthy rival to the other-worldly 1996. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2025.
Wow! What extraordinary wines Grand-Puy-Lacoste has produced in both 1995 and 1996. At present, I have a marginal preference for the blockbuster 1996, but I am not about to argue with anybody who prefers the 1995! Both are compelling wines." 95 points Robert Parker

The 1990 is one of the greatest wines ever produced at this famous chateau along with the 1961, 1982, 1986 and 2000. This perfect stock is directly from the chateau in original wooden cases.
"This wine continues to get better and better and is certainly one of the great successes in what is a profound vintage for Bordeaux. While the wine still tastes young, it is already complex, with so much sweet tannin and lavish fruit that it is impossible to resist, even though it probably will not hit its plateau of maturity for another 5-6 years. A stunning nose of licorice, earth, cedar, provencal herbs, black currants, asphalt, and cherries soars from the glass. Full-bodied, opulent, with fabulous concentration, a seamless texture, and ramarkable stuffing and power, this low acid, thick, almost viscous wine can be drunk now or cellared for at least another two decades. Anticipated maturity: Now-2020. Last tasted, 9/02" 96 points Robert Parker

We've always known that this wine would eventually turn out as great as the other First Growths. Jean Delmas always compared it to the 1959 and he was right. Recently Robert Parker stated that he's starting to agree and re-rated it 96 points. We have tasted the wine three times in the last month and it has been incredible each time.
"Robert Parker's Hedonist's Gazette - January 2005 Dinner. "...We then did a mini-horizontal of the five first-growths of the 1982 vintage. Haut-Brion seems to get better and better every time I taste it, leading me to believe I under-rated it. I am beginning to agree with Jean Delmas, who has always compared it to the 1959, I wine I have consistently rated (at least from pristine bottles) 100 points." Rating: 96 points

One of the greatest Las Cases ever, along with the 1982, 1986 and 2000. The chateau has re-released limited quantities of this amazing wine and we jumped all over it. Very difficult to find in any large formats and of perfect, documented provenance.
""A profound Leoville Las Cases, this is one of the great modern-day wines of Bordeaux, rivaling what the estate has done in vintages such as 2000, 1990, 1990, 1986 and 1982. The 1996's hallmark remains a sur-maturite' (overripeness) of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. Yet the wine retained its intrinsic classicism, symmetry, and profound potential for complexity and elegance. The black/purple color is followed by a spectacular nose of cassis, cherry liqueur, toast, and minerals. It is powerful and rich on the attack, with beautifully integrated tannin, massive concentration, yet no hint of heavyness or disjointedness. As this wine sits in the glass it grows in stature and richness. It is a remarkable, seamless, palate-staining and extraordinarily elegant wine - the quintessential St Julien, made in the shadow of its next door neighbor, Latour. Despite the sweetness of the tannin, I would recommend cellaring this wine for another 4-5 years. Anticipated maturity:2010-2040." 98+ points R. Parker

In this legendary vintage, where it is virtually impossible to find a mediocre bottle of Bordeaux, Lynch Bages has fashioned an amazing wine that will probably stand as their best ever, even eclipsing the 1989 and 1990.
"An utterly profound Lynch-Bages, this wine continues to remind me of a hypothetical blend of the 1990 and 1989. Interestingly, when I asked Jean-Michel Cazes to rank his top four vintages of Lynch-Bages, he ranked the 1989 first, followed by three vintages that he said were essentially equivalent in quality - 1990, 1996, and 2000. The 2000 Lynch-Bages exhibits a dense purple color, loads of glycerin and extract, big, muscular, sweet creme de cassis notes, with hints of new saddle leather, earth, and tobacco leaf. The 2000 is forceful yet plush, with a thick, juicy, succulent mid-palate, ripe tannin, and a long, layered finish. I know it will be tempting to pull corks on this wine in its youth, but it really will not hit its stride for 7-10 years and will last for at least 25. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025." 95 points Robert Parker

A legendary wine from a legendary vintage. It would be foolish not to pack a cellar with all the great 2000 Bordeaux and Montrose is most definately a "must have". The wine has all the components to be as great as the magic 1990, 1989 and 1961.
"This estate has frequently hit the bull's eye over recent vintages, and the 2000 Montrose is the finest effort produced since the compelling 1990 and 1989. This gigantically sized, tannic, backward effort boasts a saturated inky purple color followed by a huge nose of acacia flavors, crushed blackberries, creme de cassis, vanilla, hickory smoke, and minerals. Extremely full-bodied, powerful, dense, and multi-layered, this unreal Montrose should last for 30+ years. A blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, this is a special wine that has exceptional purity and length. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2040." 97 points Robert Parker

This amazing Montrose is barely bottled and it has already attained legendary status. It looks like it may even surpass the 1989, 1990 and 2000. Don't wait too long because it is not going to get any cheaper.
"Certainly one of the vintage’s most colossal wines and clearly one of the estate’s greatest efforts, rivaling the 1989, 1990, and 2000, this wine, which tips the scales at 13% alcohol (the 1990 was 13.5%), has an amazingly opaque purple color to the rim, and a big, sweet, exotic nose of blackberry liqueur intermixed with acacia flower, creme de cassis, smoke, and hints of truffle and vanilla. In the mouth the wine is full-bodied, opulent, but offers surprising definition and finesse, which is something it was showing less of nine months ago. Brilliantly delineated in spite of its amazing concentration and unctuosity, this is a thrilling, exceptional effort that should prove to be a modern-day legend. I tend to think this wine will actually be approachable in 5-6 years but capable of lasting for at least three decades. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2030+. To reiterate what I said last year, this is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, and the rest equal parts Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot." 97-100 points R. Parker

With 2005s coming out at high prices, collectors should be focusing on great wines from previous vintages that are truly fantastic deals in today's market. Mouton 1998 is certainly one of them. It is one of the greatest wines ever produced by this famous chateaux and it is priced 50% less than 2000 and probably 50% less than the 2005. Stock up on this now!
"Like many of its peers, the 1998 has filled out spectacularly. Now in the bottle, this opaque black/purple-colored offering has increased in stature, richness, and size. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc (57% of the production was utilized), it is an extremely powerful, super-concentrated wine offering notes of roasted espresso, creme de cassis, smoke, new saddle leather, graphite, and licorice. It is massive, with awesome concentration, mouth-searing tannin levels, and a saturated flavor profile that grips the mouth with considerable intensity. This is a 50-year Mouton, but patience will be required as it will not be close to drinkability for at least a decade. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050."96 points R. Parker

To all the Gerard Perse critics, shame on you. Let's not forget that many thought 1947 Cheval Blanc was an aberration back in the '50s and '60s. One day history will prove that some of the great vintages of Pavie (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003) will stand as some of the greatest wines ever to come out of Bordeaux. The 2003 is, most likely, the wine of the vintage and will probably be slapped with a solid 100 points. Buy it now or pay more later.
"While not as massive and concentrated as the 2000, this is one of the vintage’s top efforts. A stunningly complete wine of irrefutable nobility as well as intensity, it boasts an inky/purple color along with an extraordinary perfume reminiscent of a liqueur of rocks, black cherries, creme de cassis, and flowers. Full-bodied with superb freshness, intensity, concentration, and length, this elegant offering reveals a striking minerality, which no doubt comes from the exceptional south-facing limestone and clay soils of this renowned terroir. Production will be about 7,000 cases, and the natural alcohol reached 13.5%. There are huge amounts of sweet tannin in addition to fresh acidity and a laser-like focus. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030+." 97-100 points R. Parker

Make no mistake, this is one of the top 10 wines of the vintage and it will increase in price dramatically. An amazing wine!
"Deeply colored. Restrained nose at first, but it opens up beautifully with rich fruit and the influence of wood. Well-structured on the palate with seductive fruit, plenty of grip, and terrific concentration. This wine shows lots of extract and an orchard’s worth of fruit. Plenty of tannin but everything is perfectly balanced. Long finish. Needs time. Awesome wine and the winner of the whole show. Dollar for dollar, Lynch-Bages and Pichon Baron have to be the "best buys" among the elite wines of the vintage. " 99 points Robert Parker (Executive Wine Seminar Tasting)

We have been suggesting to our clients to load up on the great 1996 Medocs. Why? Because when you compare prices to 1982, 2000 and 2003, you will realize that most of them are still bargains. The 1996 Pichon Lalande is an amazing wine that will rival the great 1982 and certainly the 2000, and it still sells at a reasonable price. We have just bought a few cases directly from the Chateau. Perfect, original stock and none of that beat up, auction stuff.
"The 1996 Pichon-Lalande is just as awesome from bottle as it was from multiple cask tastings. For Pichon-Lalande, the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon is atypically high. This wine normally contains 35-50% Merlot in the blend, but the 1996 is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. Only 50% of the estate's production made it into the grand vin. The color is a saturated ruby/purple. The nose suggests sweet, nearly overripe Cabernet Sauvignon, with its blueberry/blackberry/cassis scents intermixed with high quality, subtle, toasty new oak. Deep and full-bodied, with fabulous concentration and a sweet, opulent texture, this wine was singing in full harmony when I tasted it in January. Given the wine's abnormally high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, I would suspect it will close down. It possesses plenty of tannin, but the wine's overwhelming fruit richness dominates its personality. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2025." 96 points R. Parker
