For the 2000 Bordeaux vintage, the Moueix family (renowned negociants and owners of Chateau Petrus, among others) had released a very special assortment case of one bottle each of all the first growths, plus La Mission Haut Brion, Petrus, Ausone (substituted with D'Yquem in 2004) and Cheval Blanc. It was packed in an exotic wood case with gold locks and each bottle also individually packed in a wooden box. All in all, a very special, beautiful and rare package. 1 bottle of Chateau Margaux
1 bottle of Chateau Haut Brion
1 bottle of Chateau Lafite Rothschild
1 bottle of Chateau Mouton Rothschild
1 bottle of Chateau Latour

Just like the 1952 this is a wine for people that can appreciate the greatness of mature Nebbiolo, from a great producer in a legendary vintage. The Borgogno family has been making great Barolo since the mid 1800s and these wines are a testament to their status as the forefathers of all great Barolo producers. We can all hope that the wines from Scavino, Sandrone, Altare and many others, will age as gracefully. Don't miss this amazing wine.

"The 2001 Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni, the selection but 50,000 bottles worth, is warmer, ampler, and decisively more powerful on the nose, richer and fuller in flavor than the regular bottling, but with a velvet in the texture that makes it already approachable. There are, nonetheless, easily 15 years of exceptional drinking ahead." 95 points The Wine Advocate

"It is no secret that I adore Chapoutier's luxury cuvee of white Hermitage called Cuvee L'Oree. Made from 90-year old vines and microscopic yields of 10-12 hectoliters per hectare, this wine flirts with perfection. It is a compelling white Hermitage. Made from 100% Marsanne, it is as rich and multidimensional as the fullest, most massive Montrachet money can buy. It is unctuously textured, yet extraordinarily and beautifully balanced. I suspect it will drink well early in life, and then shut down for a few years. It should last for 4-5 decades. The 1996 possesses some of the most amazing glycerin levels I have ever seen in a dry white wine. In short, this wine must be tasted to be believed." 99 points Robert Parker

There is no better white, in the "legendary" category, that you can buy for this kind of money. Truly amazing stuff!
"The awesome 1999 Ermitage Cuvee de l'Oree flirts with perfection. It is full-bodied, with an incredible bouquet of liquid minerals, licorice, honeysuckle, citrus, and a hint of tropical fruits. One-hundred percent new oak aging has been completely absorbed by the wine's fruit and glycerin. This is a winemaking tour de force, made from exceedingly low yields of 12-15 hectoliters per hectare (less than one ton of fruit per acre). However, readers should understand that these are often unusual wines to drink because they tend to show exceptionally well for 4-5 years after bottling, then close up until about age 12. They can last for 4-5 decades. Anticipated maturity: now-2006; 2012-2050. Along with Gerard and Jean-Louis Chave, Chapoutier is producing the finest expressions of white Hermitage. His single vineyard cuvees are to die for if you like these eccentric, idiosyncratic, mammoth dry whites." 99 points Robert Parker

"Floral notes intermixed with raspberries, black currants, minerals, and a hint of new oak emerge from the dense purple-colored 2000 Ducru-Beaucaillou. The wine is sweet, dense, and medium to full-bodied, with undeniable elegance and finesse as well as a finish that lasts for 45+ seconds. A wine of remarkable symmetry, balance, elegance, and minerality, it is the Lafite-Rothschild of St.-Julien,. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030+." 94 points Robert Parker
"Fantastic aromas of blackberries, wild berries and minerals. Extremely aromatic. Full-bodied and very tight, with big, silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. Superb. A muscular Ducru. Best after 2010. 17,500 cases made. –JS" 95 points Wine Spectator

This is one of those 1982s that is a joy to savor at the moment. In magnums, it's a beauty!
"This is an elegant 1982, with blueberry, raspberry, mineral, and spicy oak aromas in the moderately intense, polite bouquet. The color is a healthy dark ruby with no lightening or amber. The wine exhibits firmness in the mouth as well as good flesh, a sweet, ripe entry, medium body, and impressive elegance and length. Not a blockbuster such as Gruaud-Larose, Leoville-Las-Cases, Leoville-Barton, and Leoville-Poyferre, this youthful, vibrant 1982 is a model of symmetry and finesse. Anticipated maturity: now-2015." 90 points Robert Parker

Always a singular wine, even for St.-Julien, the wine boasts superb purity, rich, medium to full-bodied flavors, with loads of sweetness, some subtle toasty oak, and strength and richness that builds incrementally on the palate. A top-flight Branaire, this is the finest wine made at this property since the 1996 and 1982. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025."93 points R. Parker

This fantastic Calon has finally come out of its shell and it is getting better with each tasting. Incredibly delicious stuff and one of the best 1982s.
"This wine has just begun to reveal its true personality, having under-performed for most of its life. In half-bottles it is close to maturity, but in 750ml bottles, it still needs another 4-5 years of cellaring (at least those that were purchased in pristine condition and stored properly).
The color is a medium dark ruby with a garnet center. The multidimensional nose offers up notes of dried herbs, sweet damp earth, espresso, black cherries, prunes, cedar, iodine, and iron. Extremely complex aromatically, this full-bodied, still tannic, concentrated, old style Bordeaux has two to three decades of life remaining. It is impressive, but clearly from the old-school of Bordeaux winemaking with rustic tannin, but huge depth and body. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2035" 94 points R. Parker

"This is a triumphant 2000, flamboyant, super-concentrated, yet classic in proportions. Lavish notes of roasted espresso, melted chocolate, creme de cassis, toasty new oak, and Asian spices jump from the glass of this sensationally perfumed, rather ostentatious 2000. It is enormously concentrated and pure, with low acidity and exquisite balance. Remarkably, in spite of its large size, viscosity, and opulence, it is fresh and delineated. Potentially the finest Canon-la-Gaffeliere made to date, this impeccably made wine will drink well between 2006-2022." 95 points Robert Parker

A gorgeous looking and rare Double Magnum of this legendary wine.
"Revealing considerable amber in its dark plum/garnet color, this intensely fragrant 1982 is somewhat of a paradox in that the front end suggests full maturity, but the mid-palate, finish, and overall texture denote a closed wine. A gorgeously sweet entry displays flavors of caramel, roasted coffee, jammy red and black fruits, coconut, and smoke. It is fat and full-bodied, with considerable tannin, structure, and muscle in the finish. Flamboyantly rich and precocious early in life, it is going through an awkward stage where the tannin is present, but it is also sexy, juicy, and formidably-structured. When the 1982 Cheval Blanc's component parts become totally in sync, it will be capable of meriting a three-digit rating." 99 points R. Parker

The last time we've tasted
this
wine was about a
year ago and it was absolutely stupendous. Lately,
the buzz
on Robert Parker's bulletin board is that the 1983 has
surpassed, or at the very least equaled, the 1982.
Frankly,
we've always though that it was a close call, but we
firmly
believe that the 1983 is today a superior wine.
Having said
that, we've put an inquiry to see if the chateau had
any
sitting in their cellars and, lo and behold, they've
blessed us
with
seven beautiful cases. Opportunities to grab
pristine, ex-chateau
stock of such magnificent wine, do not arise very
often and,
when considering that vintages like 1982, 2000 and
2005 are considerably more expensive, this is
extremely
attractive
"A classic example of Cheval Blanc's style, the 1983 continues to put on weight and develop favorably in the bottle. A saturated dark ruby color with some faint lightening at the edges exhibits less age than most right bank 1983s. The huge nose of mint, jammy black fruits, chocolate, and coffee is sensational, as well as surprisingly well-developed. The wine offers lusty, rich, unctuous fruit presented in a medium to full-bodied, low acid, concentrated, rather hedonistic style. There are no hard edges to be found, but there is plenty of tannin in the lush finish. Gorgeous for drinking now, this is a great Cheval Blanc that should continue to drink well, and possibly improve for another 20 years. The 1983 is far superior to anything Cheval Blanc has subsequently produced. It remains somewhat undervalued for its quality." 95 points R. Parker

This amazing wine will most certainly turn out as great as the 1982 and 1990. You can bet on it!
"I seriously underestimated this wine, as I have often tended to do with Cheval Blanc. A potentially immortal example that has gained significant weight since it has been bottled, this blend of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot has a saturated purple color and a glorious nose of Menthol, plums, mulberries, new saddle leather, cocoa, and vanilla. Remarkably fuller bodied than I ever remember it young, with an amazingly seamless texture and tremendous concentration and extract, this full bodied yet gorgeously pure and elegant wine is impeccably balanced and certainly one of the all-time great Cheval Blancs. If it continues to improve as much as it has over the last three years since bottling, this wine will certainly rival the 2000, 1990 and 1982." 96+ points R. Parker

"One of the few top Medocs that seems to be close to full maturity, the 1982 Ducru Beaucaillou shows a dense, almost inky, plum/garnet color, a strinking nose of minerals intermixed with cedar, blackcurrant, autumnal leaves, and spice box. The wine is chewy and opulent, particularly for a Ducru-Beaucaillou, with a lot of flesh and concentration. The tannins are still there but are sweet, and the velvety finish is suggestive of a wine that has entered its plateau of maturity. A gorgeous effort and certainly the best Ducru-Beaucaillou until the mid-to late 1990s. Last tasted, 1/03" 95 points Robert Parker

We Love Figeac! In a great vintage, like 1982, it can be as compelling as Cheval Blanc or Ausone. We have re-tasted this beauty recently and it has truly blossomed into one of the stars of this legendary vintage.
"The fully mature 1982 offers a profoundly complex nose of cedar, smoky tobacco/cigar box, dried herbs, black currants, licorice, and spice. In the mouth, the wine does not reveal the huge volume and roasted ripeness found in many of the top 1982s, but it does possess extraordinary complexity, finesse, and harmony. Medium-bodied, with gorgeously rich fruit, this delicate, subtle, ethereal effort is both well-defined and intense. It should continue to drink well for 7-10 years, possibly longer."95 points Robert Parker

Just like the great 1982, this is a Figeac that gets better with each tasting. Still one of the most under-valued wines of this legendary vintage.
"Figeac has become a more consistent wine over the last few years. A profound effort, the surprisingly full-bodied 2000 Figeac has an opaque purple color accompanied by a terrific bouquet of camphor, graphite, black currants, licorice, and smoked herbs. With well-balanced, powerful tannin, concentration, and pinpoint precision, finesse, and purity, this expressive as well as textured effort will drink well between 2004-2018. When Figeac hits on all cylinders, one can understand why some tasters believe it is as complex as Cheval Blanc. This is undeniably the estate's finest effort since 1996." 93 points R. Parker

This is truly a wine for the Bordeaux connoisseur and one we rarely see on the market in any meaningful quantities. Truly a great opportunity to acquire a beautiful claret to drink now and over the next 15 years.
"The 1975 Giscours is one of the outstanding successes for the vintage. Close to full maturity, it exhibits a powerful, well-balanced style. The color remains a healthy dark garnet. The wine possesses rich, concentrated fruit, full body, admirable ripeness, and an overall sense of balance despite strong tannin in the finish. This thick, rich Giscours may be the finest wine made between 1970-1994. It will continue to drink well for another 15+ years. Should readers see this wine at auction, it will probably sell for a low price. It is a classic, top-flight 1975." 92 points R. Parker

Often referred to as the "poor man's Latour", GPL 1982 does not disappoint. It is still one of the greatest wines of the vintage and with many years of pleasure ahead.
"Absolutely spectacular, the 1982
Grand Puy Lacoste must be one of the most under-
rated wines of the vintage. The color remains an
opaque ruby/purple and there is no doubting the level
of quality after one sniff and sip. The wine reveals
the classic black currant, cedary profile of a Paulliac.
Mature, yet tasting young, this massive,
sensationally concentrated, full bodied wine offers
layers of pure cassis-like fruit that comes across as
grapy because of its intensity and youthfulness. It is
a thrill to drink even though the wine is still extremely
young and only hints at the possibilities that exist
with another 5-10 years of cellaring, The finish lasts
for 40 seconds or more. Potentially, this is the
greatest Grand Puy Lacoste of the last three
decades. A tour de force in winemaking!Last tasted,

This is another one of those haunting 1982s that keeps getting better with each tasting. Still very youthful and super-juicy. A beauty!
"This is a sumptous La Lagune that has hit full maturity but shows no signs of decline. The color is a dense, opaque dark garnet. The wine offers up smoky notes intermixed with jammy black cherries, currants, licorice and earth. The wine is thick, unctuously textured, with still some moderate tannin to shed. The wine is loaded, very rich, thick and juicy, with very complex aromatics and surprising weight and power in the mouth. What else is left to be said about this legendary wine? Words simply cannot do justice. Recently sold at auction for $12,900 (a little crazy but it will look cheap in ten years time).
"I am certainly not going to argue with anyone who believes La Mission-Haut-Brion's 1989 is every bit as profound as the 1989 Haut-Brion. It is a spectacular wine, and as it ages in the bottle, it is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite La Mission-Haut-Brions, ranking alongside the 1982, 1975, 1961, 1959, and 1955. The 1989 boasts a dense, thick, purple color, followed by a sweet, roasted cassis, chocolatey-scented nose with whiffs of tobacco, tar, and minerals. The wine is extremely full-bodied, unctuously-textured, sweet, jammy, and rich. Although it is still a youthful, unformed wine, it is already delicious to drink. It should develop additional bottle bouquet by the turn of the century, after which it will drink well for 15-20 years" 100 points R. Parker

Once again, the wine of the vintage, along with La Mission Haut Brion, the 1978 Lafleur is a burly wine that has just turned the corner and has developed into a truly amazing wine. Very rare and amazing!
"More and more the 1978 Lafleur is looking like one of the two or three finest wines of the vintage, along with La Mission-Haut-Brion and Latour. This dark plum/garnet-colored wine exhibits a knock-out nose of black cherry fruit intermixed with licorice, minerals, cedar, and spice. Medium to full-bodied, with powerful tannin remaining, this highly extracted wine is atypical for the 1978 vintage. It is a weighty, broad-shouldered, muscular, virile 1978 that is just beginning to reveal secondary nuances and complexity. I have always thought this wine could develop along the lines of the 1966, and I am more convinced than ever that it is the seventies clone of that vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2020." 93 points R. Parker

The rarest and greatest of all Pomerol and probably the wine of the vintage in this very rare size. Every magnum is in beautiful, original condition. Don't wait until it reaches $5,000 at auction.
"The 1985 Lafleur is a much larger-scaled wine than the 1985 Petrus. It possesses a very special bouquet suggesting ripe plums, minerals, violets, and an intensity that comes only from old vines. Deep ruby/purple, with an exceptional richness and depth of fruit, full body, and a powerful, long finish, this wine ranks with the mammoth-sized vintages of Lafleur--1989, 1988, 1986, 1982, 1979, 1975, and 1964." 96 points R. "A wine of superb concentration and dazzling intensity, the impressive 2000 Lafleur-Petrus is tasting even better out of bottle than it did from cask. A deep saturated purple-colored, full-bodied, powerful example that is clearly in a class with the 1998, it may be the finest Lafleur-Petrus made in the last 50 years. The 2000 exhibits plenty of cocoa, black cherry, plum, and currant fruit, a large framework, and impressive concentration as well as power. I always thought this was an improved "bigger" version of the 1975, and I have no reason to think otherwise based on its performance from bottle. This has always been of our favorite 1982s and right now it is one of the most sublime bottles you'll ever have. We have gotten this perfect stock directly from the chateau. Absolutely pristine, like new, condition. Don't miss it!
"The best showing yet for this wine (admittedly it was from a double magnum, not a regular bottle), l'Arrosee's 1982 exhibited a deep ruby color with some lightening at the edge. Spectacular aromas of minerals, smoke, kirsch liqueur, and vanilla were intense and persistent. Velvety-textured and succulent, with low acidity, a terrific, thick, juicy fatness, gorgeous purity, fully mature flavors, and a 40+-second finish make this a sumptuous example of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: now-2010."95 points R. Parker

Recently re-released by the chateau, these cases are in impeccable, time-warp condition. The wine has finally come out of its shell and it is getting better with each tasting. This is a great opportunity to grab some perfect stock of this beautiful Las Cases.
"It is fashionable, as well as often justifiable, to criticize this slowly evolving vintage where disappointments outweigh successes, particularly in the Medoc. Perhaps some of the Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines will behave like 1955s or 1928s, but Leoville-Las Cases is unquestionably one of the stars of the vintage. The murky dark ruby/purple/garnet color is followed by a nose with a pronounced mineral/wet stone component intermingled with ripe, earthy, berry fruit (red and black currants galore). Still ferociously tannic to the point of astringency, this medium to full-bodied, concentrated wine reveals no signs of color degradation. The wine is intense and chewy, but still tough-textured. Those who like wines with considerable grip and tannic bite will enjoy this wine at present, but it remains a young wine that has not moved out of adolescence." 93 points Robert Parker

This legendary wine needs no introductions. We will still be talking about it in 30 years when it will be $2,000+ per bottle and wishing we bought lots more today. It is only going to get better...and more expensive.
"Tasted three times over a two month period, this youthful yet profoundly complex wine gets my nod as the finest Leoville-Las-Cases ever made. It reveals massive proportions yet extraordinary purity, elegance, and balance. This dense ruby/purple-colored 1982 still looks and tastes as if it were 5-8 years old.
The nose offers up blazingly well-delineated, pure aromas of creme de cassis, cherry jam, minerals, and toasty new oak. This unctuously-textured, gorgeously rich, pure, super-concentrated, low acid effort concludes with a 45+ second finish. There is still tannin to shed in this unbelievably fresh, lively, full-bodied, vibrant wine. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2035."100 points Robert Parker

A few perfect cases of magnums have just arrived, directly from the Chateau. A great wine to have in this size.
"This fabulous 1996 was tasted three times from bottle, and it is unquestionably the finest wine produced by this estate since their blockbuster 1990. Medium to full-bodied, with a saturated black/purple color, the nose offers notes of cedar, jammy black fruits, smoke, truffles, and subtle new oak. In the mouth, there is impressive fruit extraction, a tannic, full-bodied structure, and a classic display of power and finesse. The longer it sat in the glass, the more impressive the wine became. Backward, and massive in terms of its extract and richness, this should prove to be a sensational Leoville-Poyferre for drinking over the next three decades. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2028." 93+points R. Parker

Wow, this wine has really come on strong. A brilliant effort, it boasts an opaque purple color in addition to a gorgeously sweet nose (make that explosive nose) of blackberries and creme de cassis intermixed with minerals, smoke, and earth. The 2000 is opulent, full-bodied, and much more accessible than either of its two Leoville siblings, Leoville Las Cases or Leoville Barton, with low acidity, sweet tannin, and a layered, sumptuous finish. It continues to improve dramatically and looks to be a great success, rivaling the brilliant 1996 and 1990. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2030.95 points Robert Parker

This is truly one of the great wines of this legendary vintage. After all, Gerard Perse of Pavie owns Monbousquet so we should not expect anything less.
"From an unheralded terroir, this Monbousquet was made from extremely low yields of 28-30 hectoliters per hectare. Aged sur lie and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it exemplifies proprietor Perse's enormous efforts. Black and blue to the rim, this wine represents the essence of this terroir. Its saturated black/purple color is accompanied by extraordinary aromatics of sweet blackberries, chocolate, coffee, incense, new saddle leather, and vanilla. Remarkable intensity, lively acidity, and abundant tannin provide definition and grip. This is the most intense, muscular, and "biggest" Monbousquet made to date, and that is saying something considering the 1998 and 1999! So be prepared, it is remarkable wine. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2018."95 points Robert Parker

I am not the only crazy one to think that the 1989 Montrose is as good, if not better than the 1990. At a recent Wine Spectator tasting, the 1989 was everyone's favorite. That's the reason why you can't find a damn case anywhere. Unless, of course, you call The Wine Connection. We've just bought a few pristine cases, ex-chateau so hurry!
"This is phenomenal and I continue to believe that it is superior to the 1990. Fabulous aromas of roasted fruit, blackberry, tobacco, chocolate and toasted oak. Full and velvety and very, very fresh. Powerful and fabulously structured. This will still age for years. 22,000 cases made. -- J.S. Montrose Tasting, November 2005" 97 points Wine Spectator

Along with the 1982, this tremendous wine is the natural heir to the immortal 1945. Any large format of this beauty will be hard to find and extremely valuable in the future...don't miss out!
"An enormously concentrated, massive Mouton-Rothschild, comparable in quality, but not style, to the 1982, 1959, and 1945, this impeccably made wine is still in its infancy. Interestingly, when I was in Bordeaux several years ago, I had this wine served to me blind from a magnum that had been opened and decanted 48 hours previously. Even then, it still tasted like a barrel sample! I suspect the 1986 Mouton-Rothschild requires a minimum of 15-20 more years of cellaring; it has the potential to last for 50-100 years! Given the outrageously high prices being fetched by so many of the great 1982s and 1990s (and lest I forget, the 1995 Bordeaux futures), it appears this wine might still be one of the "relative bargains" in the fine wine marketplace. I wonder how many readers will be in shape to drink it when it does finally reach full maturity?"100 points R. Parker

A fantastic Mouton that sells for much less than recent vintages. Not to be missed!
'Bottled in June, 1997, this profound Mouton is more accessible than the more muscular 1996. A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 19% Merlot, it reveals an opaque purple color, and reluctant aromas of cassis, truffles, coffee, licorice, and spice. In the mouth, the wine is "great stuff," with superb density, a full-bodied personality, rich mid-palate, and a layered, profound finish that lasts for 40+ seconds. There is outstanding purity and high tannin, but my instincts suggest this wine is lower in acidity and slightly fleshier than the brawnier, bigger 1996. Both are great efforts from Mouton-Rothschild. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2030.95 points R. Parker

"This has turned out to be a prodigious Palmer. The saturated purple color offers up sexy, full-bodied, almost masculine notes of roasted meats, blackberries, and creme de cassis intermixed with notions of toast, smoke, and camphor. Only 50% of the production made it into the 2000, a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and 47% Merlot. The wine is opulent, rich, and full-bodied, with tannin that has become sweeter with age. Its best showing yet, most importantly, has been from bottle. This is a great Palmer that should rival the best of recent vintages, which have all been stunning, as this estate continues to go from strength to strength. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030." 96 points Robert Parker
"This takes time to unwind, but then it explodes with fruit and powerful, yet silky tannins. Perfumed and rich, with berry, cherry and tobacco character. Full-bodied, with super-well-integrated tannins and a reduced, refined palate structure. It's compacted and powerful. Very racy wine. Best after 2010. –JS" 97 points Wine Spectator

A truly magnificent Palmer that will rival the 2000, 1983 and 1989. A wine to buy now while it is somewhat under-priced.
"A successful wine for the vintage, this blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 8% Petit Verdot boasts complex notes of menthol, black currants, plums, licorice, and a hint of cappuccino in its stunning aromatics. Dense, medium to full-bodied, with high levels of tannin in a big, full-bodied style (much in the spirit of such classic Bordeaux vintages as 1966, 1986, and 1996), this wine possesses superb purity and serious length, but should be purchased only by those with considerable patience and a good, cold cellar, since it will need plenty of time. An opaque purple color is accompanied by stunning aromas of wood smoke, cocoa, black currant and cherry liqueur, coffee, scorched earth, and new oak. A wine of extraordinary concentration, elegance, and complexity, it is one of the finest Pape Clements of the last three decades, but look out ... the 2001 may be even better! "An undeniable success as well as a candidate for the Graves of the vintage in 2002, the 2002 Pape Clement boasts a deep ruby/purple color in addition to notes of smoke, hot bricks, scorched earth, red and black currants, and some high-class cigar tobacco. It is medium to full-bodied with a rich, textured mouthfeel, wonderful sweetness, ripeness of tannin, and a long finish with hints of plums, licorice, and subtle barrique. It should drink well for 15-18 years. No property in Bordeaux is pushing the envelope of quality as hard and as enthusiastically as proprietor Bernard Magrez's Chateau Pape Clement. "Give Gerard Perse credit. People thought his numerous assurances that 2000 was the greatest Pavie ever produced were premature as well as arrogant. However, after tasting this extraordinary blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon (made from low yields of 28-30 hectoliters per hectare) six separate times in 2003, it is unquestionably one of the most monumental wines Bordeaux has ever produced. Bottled in March, 2003, about nine months later than other 2000s, the color is an opaque purple, and the bouquet offers up notes of liquid minerals, blackberries, cherries, and cassis intermixed with spice box, cedar, and white flowers. On the palate, it exhibits a massive display of richness and extract, yet with pinpoint delineation and vibrancy as well as a 60+ second finish, this is the kind of phenomenal wine that Perse's critics were afraid he might produce - a no-compromise, immortal wonder that represents the essence of one of Bordeaux's greatest terroirs. Life is too short not to own and consume the 2000 Pavie. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050." 100 points Robert Parker

"One of the candidates for wine of the vintage ... again, the 2001 Pavie, from a magnificent south-facing vineyard planted primarily on limestone soil, is a blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. After a six week maceration, it spent nearly 24 months in new oak prior to being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Some Bordeaux brokers think it might be even better than the 2000 Pavie, but I do not agree. The inky/ruby/purple-colored 2001 exhibits a tight but promising nose of crushed stones, a liqueur of blackberries, cherries, and black currants, and subtle smoke and licorice in the background. Powerful, with impressive elegance, fine harmony among its elements, a multi-layered texture, it has a finish that lasts for 50+ seconds. There is considerable tannin, but it is well-integrated. Give it 3-4 years, and drink it over the next two decades. A profound effort for the vintage, it is an example of a perfectionist proprietor pushing the envelope of quality."96 points Robert Parker>

"This is a gorgeously rich, fat, concentrated wine with an intense, spicy nose of almost burnt peaches intermixed with brown butter, almond paste, and caramel. This is the most magnificent Talbot ever made, with the 1945 probably being the closest match. In 1982, Gruaud Larose is marginally superior but we're splitting hair here. "The 1989 Troplong-Mondot is an extraordinary wine. It is slightly less evolved than the 1990, with more muscle and tannin, but equally rich and compelling. The color is an opaque dark ruby/purple, and the wine offers up aromas of licorice, prunes, black cherries, and sweet cassis fruit intermingled with high quality toasty new oak and smoke. This is a full-bodied, rich, layered, concentrated wine that should evolve more slowly than the 1990. It is a spectacular achievement in this vintage! Anticipated maturity: 2003-2025. This historic wine is only made in special vintages, in honor of the man who started it all back in the late 1800s, Maurizio (Morissio) Mascarello. The 1997 is the true essence of Nebbiolo. Spectacular stuff!
"The 1997 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Ca’ D’Morisso comes from a selection of the best vines of the Monprivato vineyard and is released quite late – the 1996, in fact, has still to see the light of day. Very potent on the nose with a full panoply of sensations ranging from anisette and smoke to roses, mint, and eucalyptus, its ripe plum fruit, dense and chewy texture, and rich and velvety finish are first class indeed, the quintessence of elegant and powerful Nebbiolo. Drink: 2005-2022. "95 points The Wine Advocate

The Monprivato vineyard, located in Castiglione Falletto, is another of the great monopole sites in Piedmont. The Mascarello family has owned the vineyard, which measures just over six hectares, for over 100 years. Within Monprivato there had always been a special parcel from which Mascarello hoped to produce a riserva. In the mid- 1980s Mascarello began a quest that would take him over four years to identify the best and most suitable clones of the Michet varietal to plant in the vineyard. The parcel was finally re-planted in 1988 and Mascarello named the new wine Ca’ d’Morissio (house of Maurizio) in honor of his grandfather.
"Medium red. The 1999 Monprivato offers suggestions of flowers, sweet dark red fruit, licorice and minerals with notable weight on the palate, superb persistence and a final lingering note of sweetness on the fresh finish. It is an uncharacteristically rich and full bodied Monprivato at this stage and on this day it was absolutely amazing, dazzling tasters with its complexity, balance and sheer profoundness. As I have written in these pages before, Mascarello did not bottle his Riserva Ca’ d’Morissio in 1999 and there can be no doubt that the Monprivato benefits from the added richness of the fruit that might have otherwise gone into the Riserva. Monprivato remains one of the great values in Barolo and this 1999 is another wine that future generations will look back on as one of the vintage’s finest. I have been fortunate to taste older vintages of Monprivato on many occasions and this wine’s aging potential is decades. The 1999 is a must-have wine. 95+ points Antonio Galloni /drink after 2011, 02/06, 03/06

After a 99 point performance in 2001 comes another "out of this world" wine in 2003. This incredible blend of Aglianico and Piedirosso stands as one of the greatest wines made from anywhere in the world.
Translated from the Veronelli Guide of 2006..."There is only one question this year: Is the 2003 better than the 2001? The first is more powerful and the second more fragrant and complex, at least at the moment. Let's talk about this again in 2020."97 points Daniel Thomases of The Wine Advocate

Years from now, many will regret not having stocked up on the great 1999 Barolos. Conterno has probably produced some of his best wines ever (Monfortino may be a repeat of 1971 and 1978) and the 1999 Cascina Francia is a stunner.
"Dark lively red. The exceptional and outrageously decadent 1999 exemplifies the very best qualities of traditional Barolo. A wine of great length and persistence, it offers a multidimensional nose of sweet fruit, minerals and tar and a dense, layered personality bursting with flavors of dark ripe fruit, tar, roses and mint. Of these first four wines, the 1999 is clearly in a league of its own. 94 points Antonio Galloni /drink after 2009, tasted 05/05

Once again, the King of Barolo has fashioned a wine for the ages. The 1998 is simply mindblowing!
"The 1998 Monfortino is a monumental effort. It opens with a huge nose of licorice, roses and cocoa, then flows onto the palate with masses of sweet concentrated dark fruit that go on forever. Notes of mineral and leather gradually develop in the glass, adding further complexity as this great wine begins to reveal its expansive and profound personality. The 1998 is unusually open right now. As was the case with the 1997 at this stage, it should offer a brief drinking window over the next 6-9 months before shutting down for what is likely to be an extended period prior to awakening in the glorious prime of its life." 97 points Antonio Galloni /drink after 2013, 11/05

After the superb 2000s, Giacosa is working magic with his absolutely stunning 2001s. This vintage is not to be missed if you are a Giacosa lover.
"What a pleasure it was to taste the 2001 Barbaresco Asili. The nose is expressive, with well-delineated notes of spices, flowers and tar that meld seamlessly onto an irresistible palate packed with vibrant layers of sweet ripe fruit with an open, generous personality. This wine is showing a wonderful sense of inner purity right now and will be even better in a few years, although its qualities are abundantly apparent even at this early stage. A great effort. "The debut release of the Hermitage Ex-Voto, the spectacular 2001 spent 42 months in new French oak. Produced from four vineyard sites, l’Hermite, Les Murets, Les Greffieux, and Les Bessards, it boasts an amazingly thick purple color as well as a rich, sumptuous bouquet of smoke, licorice, creme de cassis, and earth. Full-bodied and rich, with good acidity and magnificent concentration, this is a tour de force in red Hermitage. Given its high tannin and crisp acidity, it will require patience. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2040." 94-96 points Robert Parker

Giorgio Rivetti is THE MAN, no doubt about it. First he lit the fire with his amazing Barbarescos, then blew everyone out of the water with a 98 point performance of his first vintage of Barolo Campe in 2000. The 2001 is even better and with 97 points by Daniel Thomases in the new Veronelli guide, the wine is already a star. This is a serious wine that belongs in every collector's cellar.

This amazing Super-Tuscan has left Solaia and Sassicaia so far behind. It is as great as Tuscan wine gets!
"The dense ruby/purple-colored 1997 Percarlo is compelling. Enormous in aromas, flavors, and persistence on the palate, it exhibits profound levels of concentration as well as unbelievably dense, black currant, blackberry liqueur notes infused with new saddle leather, licorice, truffles, and toasty oak. Enormously thick and viscous, with low acidity, and mouthcoating levels of extract, this wine's tannin level is high, but largely obscured by the wealth of fruit, glycerin, and extract. It is an amazing accomplishment! Anticipated maturity: now-2020. " 98 points R. Parker

Vietti's Masseria is without a doubt one of the best Barbarescos. Personally, I'd rather buy three cases of Masseria than one case of Gaja's regular Barbaresco. The 2001 is out of this world!
"Good full red. Red cherry, raspberry, minerals and rose petal on the fragrant nose. Silky entry, then highly complex and perfumed in the mouth, with great class and clarity of flavor. Lighter and less fat than Vietti's 2001 Barolos, but with no less intensity. A great Barbaresco." 93+ points Stephen Tanzer

"Undoubtedly the finest offering from this estate since 1990, the 1998 has closed down since bottling, but there is no doubting its fabulous potential. The color is a dense purple. The wine reveals high tannin, huge body, and classy black fruits intemixed with minerals, spice box, cedar and tobacco. A long, persistent, tannic finish gives this majestic effort a formidable but closed personality. Patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030" 94+ points Robert Parker
"A powerful, wonderfully toned red. Like a great javelin- thrower. Lovely mineral, berry and violet aromas with hints of new oak. Full-bodied, with big yet silky tannins and a long, long finish. Best after 2010. 3,000 cases made. –JS" 95 points Wine Spectator

"The dense ruby/purple-colored, tight 2000 gradually reveals notes of oak, tapenade, blackberries, spice box, licorice, and vanilla. Deep, medium to full-bodied, and powerful, with superb purity, low acidity, and high tannin, this backward, concentrated Vieux Chateau Certan falls just short of rivaling the sensational 1998. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030. 95 points Robert Parker
"A divine chocolate, minerally nose. Lovely balance with wonderful sophistication. Delicate and smooth velvety tannins. A sweet finish. Top-class 2000. Looking very impressive when tasted en primeur with a minerally nose and smooth velvety tannins. A top- class 2000. Then in May 2005, a wine that is just getting into its stride. A really stunning nose with fabulous definition. Minerally, blackberry leaf and a touch of brine. Very backward and primal. The palate has wonderful and balance and fine acidity. Streamlined, symmetrical, focused. Judicious amount of well-integrated new oak allows this to shine with a divine crisp finish. Brilliant." 95-96 points Neal Martin

"A brilliant effort from Alexandre Thienpont, this blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc is a deep purple-colored, fleshy, layered effort offering a sweet nose of creosote, incense, Christmas spices, plenty of red and black fruits, and hints of licorice as well as new oak. Rich, medium to full-bodied, with tremendous purity in addition to nobility, give it two more years of cellaring and drink it over the next following 15-18 years." 93 points Robert Parker
" A rounded restrained black fruity nose with hints of liquorice. Lovely definition on the palate: this is certainly a cut above the rest. Elegant, spicy with understated class and sophistication. Moderate tannins. In some ways just as good as the 2000. Splendid wine. Then at the Justerini Tasting in November 2004. A lifted nose of black truffle, mocha and sea-salt. Very cohesive and refined. The palate is quite exotic with spicy black fruit. Black truffle again with a little vanillin and creme-brulee. Very understated, though I don’t know if this is going to last as long as I initially hoped. Drink from 2006." 95- 96 points Neal Martin
"Very subtle aromas of blackberries, chocolate and plums follow through to a full-bodied palate, with very silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. An excellent wine with great intensity for the vintage. Very long indeed. Winemaker and part-owner Alexandre Thienpont is a master. Best after 2009. 4,000 cases made. –JS" 94 points Wine Spectator

A truly amazing wine and most likely the wine of the vintage, it is incredibly well priced.
" A terrific effort, this classic blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a dark ruby/purple color as well as a complex bouquet of cedar, spice box, black cherries, and cassis. With impressive purity, medium body, moderate tannin, and a long finish (40 plus seconds), it will be at its finest between 2008-2018." 93 points Robert Parker
