BORDEAUX 2003
"They may be slightly New World in style for their opulent fruit and ripe character, but the best 2003 Bordeaux remain classic clarets, displaying a richness and structure reminiscent of past great hot-weather vintages. You are going to love the wines—red, white and sweet." James Suckling, The Wine Spectator

When we first tasted this amazing wine back in January, we knew it was special. Now, after Mr. Parker's review, it is confirmed that it is one of the great wines of the vintage and also one of the best deals out there. The price is up considerably in Europe already so don't miss this fabulous St Julien!"
"Branaire Ducru has never made a better wine than its 2003 , and it remains a great value for this vintage . It appears to require 3-4 more years of cellaring. " 95 points R. Parker (March 2006)

"This wine, which tips the scales at 13.1% alcohol, is a relatively big, soft, plump style of Pauillac with a deep ruby/purple color and a sweet nose of black currants intermixed with licorice, espresso notes, and a hint of coffee. The wine is opulent, medium to full-bodied, chewy, dense, and stylistically seems more approachable and much more seductive than the brawny, muscular 2002. The chateau tends to think this is the best d’Armailhac made in recent memory. The final blend was 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020+." 89-91 points R. Parker

Make no mistake: this is one of the greatest wines and best values of the vintage! For the money, it would be hard to find a better wine in Bordeaux.
"In less than five years this property has emerged as one of the appellation’s up and coming stars thanks to the infusion of money from the American conglomerate, Colony Capital, as well as the braintrust that now oversees the winemaking, Yves Vatelot (of Reignac fame) and the internationally renowned oenologist, Michel Rolland. The dark plum/ruby-hued, open-knit 2003 offers a big, sweet nose of barbecue smoke, plum liqueur, creme de cassis, flowers, new saddle leather, and damp earth. Loads of black fruits, a full-bodied palate impression, low acidity, and a savory, expansive mouthfeel suggest it can be drunk in 2-3 years, or cellared for 15+." 92 points R. Parker

THE GREATEST POYFERRE EVER?
"I have had this wine three times out of bottle, rating it 97 once and 98 twice. It is a colossal success and a potential legend in the making. Its saturated, dense inky/blue/purple color offers up notes of crushed rocks, acacia flowers, blueberries, black raspberries, and creme de cassis. A synthesis of power and elegance, this multi-layered wine has spectacular concentration, sweet but high tannin, and low acidity A stunning effort that showcases this legendary terroir, it is a brilliant, brilliant success. The quintessential Leoville Poyferre? Anticipated maturity: 2009-2030."98 points R. Parker

Malescot has been making some incredible wines and still goes kind of unnoticed. Truth be told, the wines here can be as good or better than those of Chateau Palmer. The 2003 is a gorgeous wine and a great value.
"Malescot has produced a beautifully concentrated, surprisingly strong effort in 2003, surpassing some of its competitors such as Palmer. This is a deep ruby/purple-colored wine that tastes almost like the concentrated essence of this elegant cru classe. Notes of flowers, raspberries, black currants intermixed with some forest floor jump from the glass of this medium to full-bodied, dense, relatively opulently textured wine with low acidity but wonderful ripeness, precision, and freshness. It’s a beauty and probably the best wine of the appellation following Chateau Margaux and Lascombes. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020." 91-93 points R. Parker

A truly fantastic value from Fronsac in this superb vintage. The wine is loaded with ripe fruit and it offers great drinking for the next 15 years.
"A tremendous effort from this appellation, Moulin Haut-Laroque’s saturated purple-colored 2003 exhibits scents of liquid minerals, blueberries, blackberries, and flowers. Having soaked up all of its wood aging, it reveals tremendously rich fruit in addition to big, broad, powerful flavors, surprising density, fine glycerin, and a heady finish. This top-notch sleeper of the vintage should be at its finest between 2006-2018."90-92 points Robert Parker

Once again a fantastic effort from this Chateau that tends to produce wines that could easily beat most Second Growths in any given vintage. Whoever has recently tasted the 1990, 1995, 1996 or 2000 knows what we are talking about. This is a serious wine that is consistently one of the greatest values out of Bordeaux.
This is an April 12th comment by Mr. Parker on Bulletin Board when someone made a derogatory comment about Sociando's label...."BTW.....I would buy 2003 Sociando-Mallet if it were in a milk carton....it is that good...."
"Sociando-Mallet is the poster child for what cru bourgeois estates can achieve. This is a wine that is consistently of classified-growth quality and also one of the longest lived wines made in the Medoc. An exceptional vintage for Sociando-Mallet, 2003 has produced a spectacularly concentrated, inky blue/purple-colored wine with an extraordinary nose of blackberries, raspberries, some white flowers, and a hint of lead pencil shavings. The wine is powerful, extremely full-bodied, quite tannic, and seriously endowed. This is stunning wine that is rich, layered, and in need of 5-6 years of bottle-age. It should keep for 30+ years. It is certainly a riveting effort for the vintage and, as I wrote last year, probably a modern-day version of a hypothetical blend of a 1970 and a 1982." 94 points R. Parker

Another great sleeper of the vintage that Mr. Parker found to be outstanding at his January 2006 tasting of 2003 Bordeaux. This is a beauty that will drink early but will age very gracefully for 10-15 years.
"An overachiever from the Medoc, this beautiful sleeper selection exhibits a dense ruby/purple color along with notes of incense, tobacco smoke, cedar, and black currants. Spicy, medium-bodied, well-concentrated, and moderately tannic, it is ideal for drinking over the next 5-10 years."

That's where the 2003 vintage gets exciting. Many superb wines in this price range were produced, with low acid, great ripeness and soft tannins. This Canon-Fronsac is a beauty at a very realistic price.
"This noble effort, displaying terrific purity, power, and richness, provides further evidence that Canon-Fronsac’s cool terroirs were beneficial in the torridly hot, dry summer of 2003. An inky/ruby/purple color accompanies aromas of violets, blueberries, and crushed stones. Powerful, rich, and generous, this sleeper of the vintage should be at its finest between 2006-2014." 88-90 points R. Parker
