It is no secret that 1998 will go down in history as one of the truly greatest vintages ever for the wines of Pomerol and St. Emilion, along the lines of 1947, 1948, and 1950. All the best wines are tasting better every time and scores are being upgraded. Unfortunately the wines are also increasing in price and getting harder to find. This may very well be the last of the great wines at a ridiculously good price. Don't miss it because it is truly superb.

It was big, soft and velvety with opulent fruit through and through. Sure it was a bit raw but what was in the glass was glorious. When I blind taste it in bottle, it might move up from my original rating of 92-94 points.The 1998 - as I blogged yesterday about the vintage - showed why I think this a great year for Pomerol. Troplong Mondot performed beautifully at recent Union des Grand Cru tastings in NY and LA, as it was the favorite wine of the hundreds of people attending. Blue/purple in color, with great concentration and intriguing nose of blueberries, chocolate and just the right dosage of new oak, the 2004 Troplong is certainly one of the stars of the vintage and worth every penny. The Wine Spectator bestowed a 100 point rating to the 2000 vintage in Piemonte, and for a reason. The wines are beautifully, balanced, forward and very accessible. Even though they will develop and last, some of them are a joy to drink now. Once again, Attlio Ghisolfi has fashioned a gorgeous Barolo and it is sold at a fraction of the price of some of his more "famous" neighbors.
