"The 2001 Outsider is superior to the 2000 vintage, the first to be bottled. A Bordeaux blend with the maximum focus, purity, and expressiveness in its aromas, its concentrated body, superior delineation and complexity, and long, rich finish indicate that it will drink well for another decade and a half. This wine demonstrates that Umbria can make Cabernet-based wines which comfortably compete with the best of Italy, Tuscany included." 95 points TheWine Advocate

"The 2001 Sagrantino-based wines of the estate are notably different than those of the powerhouse 2000 vintage, probably the best in the history of the property, even if 1998 offers some stiff competition. The difference is immediately felt in the 2001 Montefalco Sagrantino Collepiano, the regular bottling (to use an inappropriate phrase), fragrant, expansive, and long on the nose but already suppler, rounder, and readier on the palate than the 2000 version of the wine, even if it will easily last another decade. Daniel Thomases of the Wine Advocate has rated it 96 points in the 2006 Veronelli Guide and the wine has disappeared throughout Europe. The same score and review wil appear in The Wine Advocate and then everyone will be scrambling to buy some. This is an amazing steal for a classic, top notch Barolo. Cavallotto Rules!

The 2001 is a gorgeous wine that shares many of the same characteristics as the "Grand Vin". At this price, it is absolutely not to be missed!
"The surprisingly heady, forward 2001 Chapelle d’Ausone provides a wonderful introduction to Ausone. Its dense plum/purple color is accompanied by sweet aromas of blueberries, blackberries, incense, minerals, and Asian spices. Ripe and opulent, it is best drunk over the next 10-12 years." 90 points Robert Parker

Another fabulous and well priced wine from the juicy, very giving 2003 vintage, the 2003 Beausejour Becot is sure to please everyone now and over the next 15 years.
"From a 41-acre vineyard situated on St.-Emilion’s limestone plateau, Beau-Sejour-Becot’s blend can vary, but it is approximately 70% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Production can be as low as 4,000+ cases (in a tiny vintage such as 2003), or as high as 7,000+ cases (in an abundant year such as 2004). The 2003, which reminds me of a 1990 Right Bank Bordeaux, tips the scales at 13.5% alcohol. Its dark plum/ruby/purple color is followed by a sweet nose of creosote, scorched earth, black cherries, currants, and pain grille. Deep, full-flavored, muscular, textured, and rich with light to moderate tannin in the finish, this lavishly rich, full-bodied effort requires 1-3 years of bottle age, and should drink well over the following 12-15."93 pointsR. "After several less than stellar performances, the 2000 has turned out well. Aromas of sweet kirsch liqueur intermixed with blackberries, underbrush, and plums jump from the glass of this opaque ruby/purple-colored 2000. "This flamboyant, dense, opaque purple-colored wine, made from a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot, is muscular, with an unctuous texture and high levels of tannin as well as extract. Compared to its other sibling in the Mouton-Rothschild stable, d'Armailhac, it is far more closed and tannic but still somewhat ostentatious, with smoky, leathery notes intermixed with oodles of black fruits and spice box. The 2005 Fonbel offers an inky/purple color, sweet aromas of flowers, crushed rocks, blueberries, and cassis, a full-bodied palate, and loads of extract, glycerin, and sweet tannin. This large-scaled wine has a saturated ruby/purple color and a big creme de cassis nose, with a hint of licorice and tobacco. Still somewhat closed, this deep, full-bodied, luscious, muscular offering exhibits ripe tannin, loads of fruit, and tremendous purity. This is a gorgeous example of one of the most popular wines in the Medoc. Its savory tannin and low acidity suggest it should be close to its plateau of drinkability in 4-6 years. "Patience will be rewarded with this style of Bordeaux that typifies restraint and subtlety. The deep ruby-colored 2000 is an impressive youthful Haut-Bailly. The acidity is low, the tannin is present, and the overall quality is pure and well-balanced. This is a classic example of finesse and elegance. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025." 90 points Robert Parker
"Wonderful finesse and length to this wine. Loads of plum and berry, with hints of raspberry. Full-bodied, with a solid, velvety core of ripe fruit and tannins. Long finish. One of the few Pessacs better in 2000 than 1998. American-owned. Best after 2010." 92 points Wine Spectator

It is no secret that 1998 will go down in history as one of the truly greatest vintages ever for the wines of Pomerol and St. Emilion, along the lines of 1947, 1948, and 1950. All the best wines are tasting better every time and scores are being upgraded. Unfortunately the wines are also increasing in price and getting harder to find. This may very well be the last of the great wines at a ridiculously good price. Don't miss it because it is truly superb.
James Suckling, April 25th 2007..Three wines stole the show: 2005, 1998, and 1989. The 2005 was a barrel sample, and showed why the vintage is already so legendary. It was big, soft and velvety with opulent fruit through and through. Sure it was a bit raw but what was in the glass was glorious. When I blind taste it in bottle, it might move up from my original rating of 92-94 points. The 1998 - as I blogged yesterday about the vintage - showed why I think this a great year for Pomerol. The finish was amazing. It just kicked in like a turbocharger, with wonderful bright and ripe fruit and a long, long fresh finish. "What a wine!" I wrote on my menu. 94 points, non-blind.

Guess what? Margaux was blessed in 2004 and we are betting our own dollars that Lascombes is one the wines of the vintage. It has been performing beautifully in recent tastings and it truly is one the greatest bargains on the market considering its quality. You don't want to miss it!
"This property has exploded in quality since it was acquired by the American company, Colony Capital. Chateau Reignac’s Yves Vatelot was brought in to oversee the winemaking, and everything was revolutionized with the assistance of Dr. Alain Raynaud and Michel Rolland. This has now become one of Margaux’s top wines, even challenging Palmer and Chateau Margaux. The brilliant 2004 (50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Petit Verdot) is unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage. An inky/purple color is followed by a gorgeously expressive, explosive nose of creme de cassis, smoked meats, flowers, and graphite. Opulent, medium to full-bodied, and beautifully concentrated, with tremendous precision as well as uplift, this superb effort is atypically rich and textured for a 2004. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020. Bravo!" 92-95 points R. Parker

Anthony Barton has once again fashioned a beautiful wine that is classic, refreshing and will be very long- lived. The 2004 is a great expression of a Saint Julien from a cooler vintage and in complete contrast with the ultra-ripe 2003s. At this price, and considering the market for young and older wines, the 2004 Leoville Barton is certainly worth purchasing.

Here is a great Chateau that gets little press but consistently turns out some of the most sublime wines from the Margaux appellation. If you are looking for all the grace, elegance, richness and balance that a Margaux can offer, at a great price, you should not miss Malescot St Exupery.
"A stunning effort, and one of this year’s best buys, this 2002 has one of the vintage’s most beautiful bouquets. A deep saturated ruby/purple color is followed by a glorious concoction of spring flowers intermixed with black currants, cherries, minerals, and lead pencil shavings. Medium-bodied and concentrated, with a sweet mid-palate, ripe tannin, and a long, delineated, impeccable finish, this is a brilliant effort from Malescot St.-Exupery, which does not appear to have made any mistakes for over a decade. Just upgraded by Mr. Parker in the latest issue of The Wine Advocate, to 94-96 points. That is the same score for the 2005 vintage and that wine is more than double the price of the 2004. Buy this while you can!
"One of the stars of the vintage, the 2004 Palmer, a blend of 47% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot, is a significantly richer, fuller-bodied, and potentially more complex wine than the 2003, 2002, and 2001. The 2004's dense blue/purple color is followed by an extraordinary nose of acacia flowers, charcoal, creme de cassis, and grilled meats. This powerful, heady, full-bodied effort may turn out to be a modern day version of Palmer’s brilliant 1966. It requires 5-7 years of cellaring, and should drink well for 2-3 decades. To find a great ten year old Bordeaux, that will get better with age, at this price, is an outright steal. Buy this by the case!
" Pichon Longueville Baron's 1996 has turned out to be even better than I thought from cask. The high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend (about 80%) resulted in a wine that has put on weight in the bottle. An opaque purple color is accompanied by beautiful aromas of tobacco, new saddle leather, roasted coffee, and cassis. It is dense, medium to full-bodied, and backward, with moderately high tannin, but plenty of sweet fruit, glycerin, and extract to balance out the wine's structure. This well-endowed, classic Pauillac should be at its finest between 2006-2022."91 points Robert Parker
"Marvelous aromas of raspberry, coconut and mineral. Full-bodied, with superbly well-integrated yet powerful tannins. Chewy and fruity finish. Needs a lot of time to mellow. Much better than the barrel samples I tasted. Best Pichon-Baron since 1990. Best after 2006." 92 points Wine Spectator

"Like its neighbor, Mouton Rothschild, this wine seems to have closed down considerably after bottling. The impressively saturated opaque purple color offers up some promising aromas of black currants, vanilla, truffle, smoke, and mineral. In the mouth, it is full-bodied, powerful, layered, and enticingly textured, but oh, so backward and firm. The finish is long, but this broodingly backward, large-scaled Pontet-Canet will require considerable patience. Does it rival the brilliant 1995 or 1996? I am not sure. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2030." 92 points Robert Parker

Make no mistake, Pontet Canet 2003 is as good or better than Mouton (neighboring property) in this vintage. For the money, it is one incredible bottle of wine!
"One cannot say enough about the labors of proprietor Alfred Tesseron, who has personally overseen the dramatic increase in quality of the wines at Pontet-Canet which started in a significant manner with 1994. This is a classic Pauillac-styled wine (meaning oodles of cassis flavors), as one might expect from a vineyard on the plateau of Pauillac, across the street from Mouton-Rothschild.
One of the great successes of the vintage and certainly one of the most profound Pontet-Canets made over the last decade is the 2003. Deep purple to the rim with a glorious nose of scorched earth, black currant jam, smoke, licorice, and roasted meats, it is full-bodied, incredibly powerful, dense, with low acidity but high tannin, broad-shouldered, and savory. This is a stunning, pure, classic Pontet-Canet that should be at its best between 2010 and 2035." 95 points R. Parker

One of the great wines of the vintage and certainly a superb value as well, from the Martin family of chateau Gloria, Saint Pierre 2003 is one wine to take seriously
"A powerhouse effort from this small classified growth St.-Julien estate, the 2003's thick, unctuous-looking purple color is accompanied by an explosive perfume of cigar tobacco, melted licorice, incense, creme de cassis, and spice box. Opulent, full-bodied, and rich with firm tannin and higher glycerin and alcohol than usual, it should be cellared for 4-5 years and enjoyed over the following two decades."93 points R. Parker

One of the most successful, and now hard to find, wines of this legendary vintage. Along with Pape Clement, Haut Brion and La Mission, it is a star of the Graves appellation. It is a fabulous wine that is still worth every penny.
"A sensational effort, and undeniably the finest wine to ever emerge from this estate, the opaque purple-colored 2000 offers scents of tobacco, camphor, graphite, creme de cassis, and licorice. This full-bodied, concentrated effort possesses low acidity, a multi-layered texture, tremendous intensity of flavor, and a persistent finish with considerable ripe, well-integrated tannin. This is a brilliant example of equilibrium and finesse allied to considerable power and flavor. Kudos to the Cathiards. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025" 94 points Robert Parker

Make no mistake, this is a serious wine. Sociando Mallet is often one of the greatest, most under-rated bargains in all of Bordeaux. The 2001 is an amazing wine and even better than the 2000. Don't miss it!
"This Haut-Medoc performed spectacularly on the two occasions I tasted it from bottle, even eclipsing its impressive showing from cask. It looks to be every bit as powerful as the 2000 ... not an easy achievement. A fabulous sleeper of the vintage, it tastes more like a first-growth than an unclassified offering. Its inky/blue/purple color is accompanied by a spectacular bouquet of lead pencil shavings, ink, blackberries, cedar, and earth. Full-bodied, with terrific texture, fabulous concentration, and moderately high tannin, this massive, atypical 2001 must be tasted to be believed. A brilliant achievement! Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020+"93 points Robert Parker

Troplong Mondot performed beautifully at recent Union des Grand Cru tastings in NY and LA, as it was the favorite wine of the hundreds of people attending. Blue/purple in color, with great concentration and intriguing nose of blueberries, chocolate and just the right dosage of new oak, the 2004 Troplong is certainly one of the stars of the vintage and worth every penny. Stick it in the cellar for 2-3 years and enjoy it over the next 20. A beauty!

Make no mistake, 1996 was an amazing vintage for Barolo and to find one this good, at this price, really is a rare treat.
Daniel Thomases of The Wine Advocate in the August 2005 Issue..."Any 1996 Barolo from better producers still floating around should obviously be snapped up immediately."
"The greatness of the 1996 vintage is obvious in the saturated ruby/purple colors of Cordero's wines. The 1996 Barolo Monfalletto reveals lots of mineral and new saddle leather scents in addition to black raspberries, cherries, tar, and rose petals. Extremely full-bodied, with new oak coming through in the flavors, this powerful, multi-dimensional, sensational Barolo should offer thrilling drinking after a decade of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025." 91-93 pts R. Parker
"Fabulous. Intense aromas of fresh roses, with balsamic and cherry notes, introduce this full-bodied, muscular Barolo. It's thick and rich, with velvety tannins and a long, chocolaty, meaty finish. Best after 2005." 93 pts Wine Spectator

Once again, D'arenberg produces one of the greatest Shiraz of the vintage. This is spectacular stuff!
"One of this estate’s flagship wines, the 2003 The Dead Arm Shiraz appears to be better than the 2002. A deeper, richer, fuller-bodied offering that spent time in equal parts French and American oak, it possesses an opaque purple color, great intensity, and a fabulously sweet nose of blackberries, cassis, asphalt, earth, and oak. Powerful, super-concentrated, and obviously fashioned from low yields and old vines, this is a classic McLaren Vale old vine Shiraz that should age nicely for 15+ years. " 95 points R. Parker

The 2001 vintage in Spain was what 2000 was in Bordeaux. Uniformly great! Toro is the region that gave us the amazing wines of Numanthia and a few others. The Gran Elias Mora is absolutely stunning and a fantastic value when considering the tremendous quality in the bottle. Don't miss this amazing wine.
"The most prodigious wine in this portfolio is the 2001 Gran Elias Mora. Fashioned from 70-year old Tinto de Toro (Tempranillo) vines, and bottled unfiltered, this magnificent, dense purple-colored effort boasts a sweet perfume of roasted meats, scorched earth, blackberry liqueur, and cassis. It is a dense, full-bodied, fleshy effort revealing beautifully integrated wood, acidity, and tannin. Flamboyant yet well-delineated, it will be a treat to drink over the next decade." 95 points R. Truly one of the very greatest Barolo of this amazing vintage and still so well priced. Stick this in the cellar and in 10 years you will not regret it
"The 2001 Barolo Monprivato, a light to medium red, represents the highest level of elegance, with a captivating nose of roses, tar, orange peel, cinnamon and licorice, followed by layers of sweet dark fruit and minerals that evolve in a never-ending counterpoint of aromas and sensations, with much depth, precision and freshness on the finish. Everything is perfectly in balance here – still my guess is that this great wine is showing only a hint of its potential. It is one of the finest Monprivatos in recent memory and a wine no one who is passionate about Barolo should be without. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2026." 95 points Antonio Galloni (The Wine Advocate)

There is no better Barolo out there, especially at this fabulous price. Attilio Ghisolfi is a man on the rise and his incredible Barolo "Bricco Visette" is simply one of the greatest wines of Piemonte. It is not to be missed!
"The wines here are concentrated, firm, and easily identifiable as Nebbiolo from Monforte d’Alba, but never tough and aggressive, and the 1999 Barolo Bricco Visette is the best since the 1996 vintage. A firm ruby/garnet in color, its ample and intense nose of cherries and currants, roses, and chocolate is matched by an important density and texture, high-level concentration balanced by velvety tannins, and a fine complexity of herbs, tar, and licorice to accompany the sweet fruit and abundant glycerin. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020." 92 points The Wine Advocate

The Wine Spectator bestowed a 100 point rating to the 2000 vintage in Piemonte, and for a reason. The wines are beautifully, balanced, forward and very accessible. Even though they will develop and last, some of them are a joy to drink now. Once again, Attlio Ghisolfi has fashioned a gorgeous Barolo and it is sold at a fraction of the price of some of his more "famous" neighbors.
"Very, very ripe on the nose, verging on raisins, with hints of tobacco and meat. Full-bodied, with loads of jammy character and soft tannins. Long, dense finish. A late harvest style of red. Massive. Slightly rustic now but impressive. Best after 2009. 1,000 cases made. (JS)" 94 points The Wine Spectator

We are big fans of Attilio Ghisolfi's wines! Along with Cavallotto, and very few others, they are producers of fantastic wines that sell for very reasonable prices. This "Riserva" is only produced in very special vintages and is incredibly well priced for a wine of such stature.
Product of a single vineyard named „Fantini“ situated in the area of Visette. This wine is the top product of Azienda Agricola Attilio Ghisolfi. This wine is produced in limited number of bottles and only in good years. The wine has a granate red, the fragrance rich and complex with warm notes of the Nebbiolo and flavours of flowers and jam. The taste is rich and potent with consistent tannins but well dissolved with its structure. Its remarkable body, its optimal persistence and harmony, is the final sensation of this wine.

Soft, fleshy, and opulent, with a dense ruby/purple color as well as a big, sweet bouquet of kirsch, black currants, and licorice, this full-bodied, spicy, pure, rich, moderately tannic effort should be at its finest between 2006-2016." 90-93 points R. Some people have complained about the high prices for some of the ultra-rare highly sought after 2005 Burgundies. Well, here is your answer...a fabulous Grand Cru 2005 at a bargain price. A very smart buy for sure.
"Here the nose is more deeply pitched with an aromatic spectrum that runs more toward black and blue fruit aromas tinged with obvious earth and spice notes plus a touch of animale that can also be found on the rich, full and intense full-bodied flavors that possess good grip and a more obviously structured finish that is strikingly long. This is less fine than the Clos St. Denis but there is more overall depth of material." 91-93 points Allen Meadows (Burghound)
