Bordeaux connoisseurs have known for a while that some 2001 Pomerols are worth searching for especially now that they have started to shine and receive accolades. The good part is that, since Mr. Robert Parker has been slacking off at re-tasting many older wines, prices have stayed very reasonable. Having said that, other writers (see Neal Martin, now with The Wine Advocate) have been singing their praises. One wine that stood out at a recent 2001 Pomerol tasting is La Conseillante. After a couple of years of dormancy, the true carachter and breed is starting to show, while the price remains an absolute bargain in the realm of truly great Bordeaux. We have acquired perfect, ex-chateau stock of this beauty and the price makes a mockery of any other great vintage (see 1982, 1989, 1990, 2000 and 2005) "This is rather jammy on the nose with macerated cherry, cassis and blueberry; a touch of soy developing with aeration although it does gain clarity in the glass. The ebullient palate is full-bodied, slightly overdone perhaps and in need of more acidity. Blueberry, plum, liquorice and game. Dense, tannic finish: this certainly needs more time and is even a little unresolved at present. Patience required but I have faith in this outstanding Pomerol. This vineyard’s clay and limestone soils were a perfect antidote for the atypical climatic conditions of June, July, and August, 2003. Consultant Stephane Derenoncourt thinks the 2003 is the finest Pavie-Macquin produced to date, but it has some serious competition from both the 2000 and 1998. The color is an inky/purple/black, and the bouquet offers up scents of scorched earth, creme de cassis, blackberries, English walnuts, lead pencil shavings, and camphor. Extremely powerful, potent, and full-bodied, with enormous richness, a liquid minerality, a massive mid-palate and finish, and huge, but sweet, well-integrated tannin, this is clearly an offering from another era. It may have more in common with the most concentrated wines of 1947, 1945, 1929, or 1900 than more recent vintages. "One of the most positive surprises of my tastings this year wasn’t a 2005 or 2004 Riserva but rather Il Poggione’s 2003 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli, which has developed spectacularly since I first reviewed it last year. This awesome, deep Brunello is endowed with gorgeous dark fruit that emerges from the glass with superb richness and power while retaining a traditional sense of structure. There is more than enough fruit to balance the firm tannins that are typical of this hot year. I was blown away by the combination of opulence and classicism present in the 2003 Riserva. If that sounds appealing, believe me it is. The 2003 Riserva is drinking beautifully today and should continue to offer great pleasure for several decades. The estate’s 1975, from a very hot vintage at the time, was in great shape when I last tasted it a few years ago. As an aside, readers interested in older vintages will find plenty of notes on our database. Given the soft market for fine wines and the general disdain for 2003s, I would be shocked if savvy readers aren’t able to pick up this wine at a favorable price at some point in the near future. However, the color seems to get deeper with exposure to air (the wine was far more drinkable after 24 hours of aeration than it was upon opening). The moderately intense bouquet exhibits plenty of ripe blackberry and cherry fruit, in addition to spicy, mineral characteristics. There is considerable weight and volume, but the wine is tight, and nearly impenetrable, leaving an impression of a large, deep, four-square monolith in need of 7-10 years of cellaring - at the minimum.
